This past Saturday, April 7th, the night of the Easter Vigil, members of the CFN worship team, a few students, and myself attended a special worship service with the Kerala Christian Fellowship in Richmond. The occasion was a reception party for Renu (sister of our own Vijay Sugathan) and David, married two-and-a-half years earlier in Pakistan and now finally reunited after two years of toiling through the immigration process for David to finally arrive in Canada. Celebrating the Dead Sea Scrolls: A Canadian Collection is a highly-specialized, 600-page volume that features CFN’s own Kyung Baek, who joins an editorial team with two of Canada’s foremost Dead Sea Scrolls scholars, Dr. Peter Flint from Trinity Western University and Dr. Jean Duhaime of Université de Montréal. MEET THE STUDENTS... STEVE!

Steve is a first-year Pastoral Leadership student who was born in Kuwait in 1990, shortly before the first Gulf War when Saddam Hussein led Iraq to invade Kuwait. Steve’s father was a Kuwaiti businessman and multi-millionaire just a year away from graduating to become an imam (a Muslim cleric). When Iraq attacked, he and his family tried to escape to Saudi Arabia but were turned away because (incredibly) of soccer issues, but also that there were already too many Kuwaitis. The only place to flee was Iraq! Kuwait was considered a ‘ninth state’ by the Iraqi regime anyway, so the family lived in the town of Al Basarah for two years.
